June 2005

Movie Night

Saturday, June 18th: The crew of the USS Trinity River gathered for another day with the crew Serenity on Joss Whedon's Firefly. Dan Stockelman's big-screen TV displayed the final four episodes, including the three "unaired" ones, plus some nifty DVD bonus features. Dan S., Dan D., Jan, Kira, Chanda, Ed, and Robyn ate hot popcorn, cookies, and birthday cake while preparing for the opening of Serenity on September 30th. (Oh, and happy birthday to Dan D. and Kira!)

Monthly Meeting Review

Sunday, June 12th: After a bit of table-shuffling with the sketch group occupying the Half Price Books community room before us, our monthly meeting started on-time at 1:30pm. Three new members joined the ship: Marvin Ray Burt plus sisters Kira Norman and Chanda Norman. (Welcome aboard!) We reviewed plans for the STARFLEET International Conference coming up at the end of the month in San Antonio. Over half the crew is planning on attending this event.

We reviewed the anniversary picnic from Saturday and it was overwhelmingly moved to do it again next year. CMO Jan Agee told us about new prescription bottle markers while Science Officer Debbie Winters was off on a personal away mission. Chief of Operations Linda Patton was also absent as she was having laser beams fired into her eyes by a doctor. Robyn, Ed, Elizabeth, Jan, Dan D., Dan S., and Kris were in attendance as well as new faces Kira, Chanda, and Marvin. The next ship event is a Firefly movie day at Dan Stockelman's house so check the ship's calendar for details and a map.

Ship Event

Saturday, June 11th: The crew gathered in Plano for a picnic to celebrate the second anniversary of the founding of our club and our launch as a shuttle. The location was Evans Park in Plano, Texas, and the facilities were excellent. On a bright, sunny day we were able to commandeer a small pavillion with a barbecue grill attached. Robyn and Ed took turns grilling the burgers and hot dogs they'd brought while Dan S., Dan D., Kris, Liz, her friend David, plus visiting ORAC member James enjoyed the fruit, macaroni, salads, chips, and other delectables brought by the crew. For dessert we enjoyed a cherry cobbler Jan sent along even though she was unable to attend. Mostly we stayed out of the sun but some fun was had in the playground before we left. We'll return to this location next year, for sure. Photos coming soon.

May 2005

Movie Night

Sunday, May 22nd: The crew of the USS Trinity River teamed up with fellow Dallas-area science fiction fans in the Organized Rebel Adventurers Club for an away mission to see Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith in glorious DLP at the Cinemark Legacy 24 in Plano. Dan, Kris, Ed, Andy, Greg, Elizabeth, and her significant other David joined with a similar number of ORAC members at this sold-out screening.

Reviews were mostly positive with complaints about continuity and some of the clunky dialogue the main points of contention. Afterwards, the crew journeyed to Texas Land & Cattle for steaks while most of the ORAC group headed north to Souper Salad for food and conversation. No photos from this event due to new Federal laws about cameras in movie theaters.

Saturday, May 14th and Sunday, May 15th: The "Star Wars" special edition of the Sci-Fi Expo at the Plano Centre in Plano, Texas, was the site of our big activity for the month. We were there with a Starfleet recruiting table as well as helping out as volunteers to help the event run more smoothly.

The weekend featured actors from all six Star Wars movies including David Prowse (Darth Vader), Ray Park (Darth Maul), Temeura Morrison (Jango Fett and Clone Commander), Matthew Wood (General Grievous), Garrick Hagon (Biggs Darklighter), Jerome Blake (multiple characters), Daniel Logan (young Boba Fett), Amy Allen (Aayla Secura), Michonne Bourriague (Aurra Sing), plus several Star Wars artists including Cat Staggs and Juan Carlos Ramos.

Thanks to all of the people that stopped by to say "hi" and to learn more about who we are and what we do. Special thanks to the people who donated to the North Texas Food Bank at our table as well. Photos coming soon.

Meeting Notice

Sunday, May 8th: As usual, our monthly meeting began almost on time at the Half Price Books on east Northwest Highway in Dallas. Plans were set for the Sci-Fi Expo in Plano in two weeks. We'll have a recruiting table and be raising money for for the North Texas Food Bank. The next Sector One movie night will be to see Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith on May 22nd, the Sunday afternoon after it opens. The banner nears completion and will make its debut at the Expo. Plans are starting to gel for our trip to the 2005 International Conference in San Antonio with nearly half the ship in the mix for this event. Photos coming soon.

April 2005

Meeting Notice

Sunday, April 10th: Our monthly meeting starte on time at 1:30pm at our regular meeting place, the community room of the Half Price Books on east Northwest Highway in Dallas. We planned our next Firefly watching event at Dan's, coordinated driving to the Region Three trip to the renaissance fair in Waxahachie, and discussed the upcoming Sci-Fi Expo Star Wars show in Plano in May. Robyn and Ed will be at Star Wars Celebration III to lend a Star Trek presence to this ultimate Star Wars event. Jan is working on a banner and will get with Ed about lettering and layout. Photos coming soon.

March 2005

Meeting Notice

Sunday, March 13th: Our monthly meeting started just a bit after 1:30pm at our regular meeting place, the Half Price Books location on east Northwest Highway in Dallas. Most of the crew was to be found in the community room, including new members Dan and Andy, plus a visitor named Harlan who might join our ranks soon. The calendar was discussed, department heads gave reports, Debbie brought us science news, and social events like a bowling night and a movie party were planned. Photos coming soon.

February 2005

Meeting Notice

Saturday, February 12th: Our monthly meeting moved one day early to coincide with the one year anniversary of our launch back in 2003! We gathered at the Cheddar's on I-635 at Greenville in Dallas after many of us spent the day at the Dallas Comic Con as volunteers. We had almost the whole crew, including our distant members like Erik and Craig Cowand, plus awards and promotions and lots of fun.

Saturday, February 12th and Sunday, February 13th: The winter edition of the Dallas Comic Con at the Richardson Civic Center (at Araphao and US 75) in Richardson, Texas, was action-packed and we were there helping out as volunteers to help this event run more smoothly. The weekend featured Thomas Jane (from The Punisher and 61*), Patricia Arquette (from NBC's "Medium"), Sean Astin (from "The Lord of the Rings" and "Jeremiah"), and David Anders (Mr. Sark from ABC's "Alias") plus others from comics inclduing the legendary Bernie Wrightson ("Swamp Thing"), James O'Barr ("The Crow"), and Tim Bradstreet.
